Demand for Bottled Beer
According to published reports prospective buyers, of bottled beer in many -other cent res Avere obliged to do without altogether or to be rationed in the amount required This was naturally no fault oC the. hotel-keepers, but was attributed to the. short-age of bottles and also to the fact- that the usual house-to-house- collectors have been handicapped by the difficulty in obtaining enough benzine, for their purposes, so that tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of badly-needed bottles must have, remained "frozen." Whakatane hotels, however, were, able to cope with an exceptionally heavy demand almost throughout the holiday season, although one or two were obliged to confess themselves defeated early in the New Year, despite orders placed well in advance for further supplies.
