OHOPE OF THE FUTURE

THE move for the formation of an Ohope Town Board to administrate the rates collected within the beach settlement and supervise the growth and amenities of the beach as a separate area from the County has brought to light several interesting facts. Of a total of seventy-five householders living at Ohope, only six object to the move to form a separate, rating district. The Whakatane County Council has decided to contribute £650 of its current revenue as the assessed share of the Ohope area, and with thi& sum the new Town Board would have a revenue in excess of fourteen of the Town Boards at present constituted in New Zealand—the total number being twenty-one Because of the co-operation of the Whakatane County Council net expenditure on administration and stationery will not exceed £70 per annum, which figure will be below the average administrative costs of Town Boards throughout the Dominion. Everything points to the move being a soundly progressive one which is meeting with the, support of the bulk of the residents. This assumption is borne out by the fact that the petition praying for the Board's formation contains no less than sixty-three signatures ?nd has now gone forward to the Governor-General for consent.
