PROVISION IN SCHEME PLAN
HARBOUR BOARD'S FORESIGHT
Reporting on the progress of the Board negotiations with the Whakatane Borough Council relative to the newly designed plan for the extension of the business section of the town over the reclaimed harbour mudflats, the chairman of the Harbour Board, last Friday said that • the Conncil considered that there was not sufficient provision for reserve areas near the main centre. Mr Boon wont on to .say that in consultation with the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, sin alternative suggestion had been jna.de which would include the present Borough Chambers site.
This would allow ample room for developing a recration area of gardens', lawns and Ift would make for a splendid open square in the heart of the town as a setting for the municipal blocks. He personally favoured it and hoped that, the Borough Council would recommend the alteration in the interests of the town and 'its; future layout. The Board decided to defer consideration pending receipt, of adr vice from the Borough Council.
