Sir Heaton Rhodes and party wlio arc. proceeding to Auckland to take part in the fifteenth. anniversary of the St. John Ambulance movement, will be spening the night in Wha«katano to-day (Tuesday). They will be the guests of Mr Alee Canning, president of the local committee and officers of, the local units. They wi.l also be contacting the leaders of the various training corps. The many friends of Mr and Mrs W. S. Harris, of 23 Lovelock Street, Whakatane. will be pleased to learn that they have just received news of their son, Pilot Officer N. J. Harris, who after completing his round of operations is now instructing in Have lord-Wales in England. He states that he is well and enjoy* ing a well-earned rest after two vears of active service.
Referring to Mr R. O. Tomkins nine years service as assistant and acting-engineer to the Wliakatane County Council, the chairman last Tuesday saicl that, members,, one and all realised what a difficult job he had been carrying out and joined in wishing liiin the best success in his new appointment to Kawliia. Responding, .Mr Tomkins thanked the council for their unfailing help and co-operation ami paid a warm tribute to: the: work of the county staff (inside and out) for the splendid manner in which they had worked with him during a difficult period. On behalf of the. members the chairman then maded a suitable presentation. Mr Tomk'ins was also the subject of a vote of thanks and appreciation by the Harbour Board, of which he is consulting engineer, last Friday.
