UNITED DEFEAT WAIMANA McKENZIE'S CHANCKLESS DISPLAY

The two loading teams in the Collins Shield competition met at Whakatanc and United defeated 'Waimana on the. first innings. United won the toss and sent Waimana in to bat. Good fielding combined with the accurate bowling of McKcnzic and Rigd.on's "googlies" steadily accounted for Waimana's wicket, Axtens playing through the iitiiinsS for a cautious 31 before be-, ing caught. Rigdon secured .) wic-. kets for 48 runs and, McKenzie 3 for 11. The innings closed with 97 runs on the board. United, opened their innings disastrously with three quick wickets to Menzies with only 17 up. McKenzie was then joined by Johns who partnered the opening batsman to carry the score to 117. McKenzies display was easily the best yet seen this season and he did not give a chance but carried; his bat for 116 runs. His innings which of necessity Avas a "back to the wall" one, was also aggressive and he played all the bowlers with confidence. Johns contributed 19 in steady play and the innings closed with IGO' runs. At stumps Waimana had lost 5 wickets for 71 in their second, knock.
