ACUTE SHORTAGE
"TOBACCO FOR RURAL AREAS
Correspondence has been going on the Minister of Supply and Auckland Farmers' Union with reference to shortage of tobacco in rural areas. It was pointed out to the Minister that fanners who order .all their goods from country storekeepers and have little opportunity of buying from tobacconists, arc in .an unfair jjosition, as compared .with •others who are regular customers of tobacconists, rural storekeepers obtaining such limited supplies that ithey cannot povide their customers .-.at times with any tobacco and. cigarettes. Reply has been received that investigation has; disclosed many anomalies and inequalities in distribution, and, that steps had been taken to ensure that more supplies were .sent to districts in which there had been population increases, while the position of baekblock residents had Jaeen alleviated. Benefit was being felt lion! the increased hours being worked in tobacco factories and the •extra workers recruited, and. it was hoped difficulties in future would be; fewer.
