WOMEN STEVEDORES
CARGOES HANDLED IN RUSSIA MUSCLES LIKE WOODCHOPPERS "Women stevedores in Archangel are. handling cargoes more efficient-, ly than Australian and American longshoremen," declared. Mr C. L. Stanhope, an Australian officer in a British merchant shift, who recently completed his third convoyed trip to Archangel. These women had muscles like woodchoppcrs at the Sydney Show, said Mr Stanhope. Most of the men in Archangel lvad been called up. He added: "Nothing is wasted in Rus.s>ia. Women labourers save wood, steel,, and even nails from the crates in which goods are. shipped to Russia." Mr Stanhope says that Australian stamps are a valuable rarity among Russian children living near Archangel. He eagerly collected Australian stamps in New York to take them back to children in Archangel.
