OBITUARY
MRS RUBY LUXTON One who had lived most of her life in the district audi had played aiv active and fruitful- part in its social and community life passed away last Sunday in the person of Mrs J>uby Luxton, wife of Mr L, W. Luxtoiv of Awakcri. The late Mrs Luxton was horn fifty-three years ago in Auckland but came to these parts as a child with her parents. Her father built and held the license for the iirst ( bmmercial Hotci in Whakatanc, and forty-seven years ago when the Opouriao Estate was cut up, drew a section in the new settlement. With his young famih r he moved to the farm and, Mrs Lux ton's name (Ruby Smith) appeared in the. recently published roll of the first pupils who attended the first Gpou-, riao School. Mrs: Luxton moved on to other parts after her schooling but returned to this district twentyeight years ago when she married and commenced taking a wide and active, interest in local affairs. She was a foundation member of the Whakatanc Plunket Society an organisation of which she was president for a number of years. A prominent foundation member of the Women's Institute and the League of Mothers she was also elected president of both these groups as well as of the W.D.F.U. (Awakeri Branch) and the Bernardo's Helpers League. Active in all movements dedicated to the furtherance of a worthy cause she was never appealed to in vain and lent herself wholeheartedly and liberally to all local efforts which made, for the betterment of the district and the community. An energetic worker in the interests of the Patriotic campaign she represented Awakcri on the Central Executive and spared no pains in the organising of her district. A member of the Church uf England she was also a member of the Anglican Choir in Whakatane for a number of. years. The late Mrs Luxton will be sadly missed by a very wide circle of friends in the Eastern Bay of Plenty where she has been known for sfr many years for her bright, and happy nature, her kindliness and remarkable capabilities. Her life c.» service .in the interests of so manyorganisations will be cherished by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Mr L. W. Luxton,. of Awakeri, and a family of four, a daughter MissLois Luxton (Awakcri) and three soils Don (R.N.Z.A.F.)V Wallace (New Plymouth High School), and Allan (Awakeri). . The funeral which took place last. Tuesday Avas attended by a large gathering of friends representing ali parts of the district.
