PAKEHA MILLHAND PROSECUTED SKQUKL TO IWUTY Had not one of thosie participating in a beer party at Te Teko not alleged the theft of her handbag in the course of the festivities it is doubtful whether John Rolfe Tohu Bryers, millhand of Edgecumbe, would have faced the Magistrate's Court in Whakatane on two charges of illegally supplying Maoris with liquor. The ease was heard before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., when defendant pleaded guilty to both charges. Sergeant Farrell explained; that the complainant was a; Maori woman Lizzie Raerino, who was apparently a member of the parly and who had .subsequently missed Imr handbag as a result. She had complained to the policci who upon making enquiries had unearthed the story of a iir.st-e.lass beer parly and the prosecution was brought as a result. Bryers was lined £5' and £2 on each count, respectively and costs. Two Maori men John Taylor Hunia and Jack Hunia were also charged and pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting in the offence. Both were fined £2 each and costs*
