BAND CONCERT

Sir,—On Thursday night last my wife persauded mc: to attend a free concert which was given by the local Boys Band. I have a keen dis-» like to attending free concerts but when finally my good lady used the argument that one of my boys was helping to put on a gymnastic .show I decided to go and what a surprise . the evening proved to be. The music played by the band proved, to be much more advanced than could be. expected l'rom any Boys Band and was very well rendered indeed. The improvement in tone, timing and general team work of the boys during the last year i.s remarkable and speaks volumes for the interest and work done by the bandmastca, Mr W. Jarrett. This band is deserving of every ones support and I; would like to see, if it is possible, the boys play at odd Sundays at the Heads when they should take around the hat j:nd I'm sure that every music lover would gladly donate. The hakas and the music supplied bj' the children, from Poroporo school were also of the greatest interest and showed that the Maoris are really musical. The lament, which was composed by Mrs Black was jjarticularly well rendered. The demonstration by the Air Training Corps was, although riot extensive very interesting. It is clear that Mr C. Jones of the Gov-, crnmcnt Physical Welfare Department. has already made progress with the boys, and notwithstanding the fact that the A.T.S. officially has cancelled the gymnastic course, it is to be hoped that he will carry on what it undoubtedly is, a splendid training for lads of that. age. Yours etc., FATHER OF THREE BOYS. ' i
