BIRDS AND THE FARMER
BIRD lovers had a moral victory at the last meeting of the Whakatane County Council when the projected purchase of three sacks of poisoned grain for free distribution amongst farmers of this district was defeated, and an interesting discussion staged which showed the wide diversity of opinion upon this vital subject. The so-called birdpest, has been proved scientifically and agriculturally to be in most cases more of a myth than an actuality, and farmers who have endeavoured to eliminate the bird life, have found to their cost that their crops, as mentioned by Cr McCracken have been systematically ruined by the uncontrolled plague of insect pests which followed the disappearance of the birds. In England where there is an awakening school of thought upon these matters it has been generally recognised that the bird life of any country plays a vital part in its productiveness, and with few exceptions the feathered families of the air are recognised as the farmers friends—not his enemies.
