PLANS REJECTED
HINDUS APPLICATION FOR SHOP •PROPOSAL FOR TK TKIvO Plans which depicted a shed-like 1 c.an-to were submitted to the AY hakatane County Council last lucsdaj by a Hindu who sought the council's approval to the construction ol" a shop at Te. Toko. The council decided that the plans were unsuitable and therefore rejected the plans. Cr Cawte said . that tlie Hindus were capturing the trade in back country settlements, by erecting shacks which should, be condemned. The living conditions, were most unsatisfactory as the family usually lived amongst the goods and already they had stores at Murupuia ; Te AVhaiti and Ruatahuna. Cr McCrcadv: You've only got. lo go round to see I lie hovels, that are. being erected. J consider the council ought to raise the standard where possible. I.t is not fair to allow these Indians to compete in trade;, in conditions which 110 white person would be allowed to live under. The council instructed the engineer to return the plans and suggest a structure of. a higher standard.
