LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION
LABOUR DAY AVKKK-FNI) We have quite a sprinkling of potential authors in our crew. No less than eight entries for the competition ! Very good indeed shipmates and now I've- got the awful job of judging them. AVell here they are: — Selene Todraan For the past two or three days my mother, sister and Ii had been constantly consulting the weather glass to see. Avhether it was rising or falling. It fell steadily until Monday morning and from then on it. began to rise and our hopes for a fine day rose with it. AA'e planned a hrkc along the river bank and at about 0 o'clock we set off carrying our food and camping utensils. AA r e chose a pretty spot near the river underneath the willows, which were just, breakinginto their spring foliage. After unpacking we boiled the billy and had morning tea. Then wc built up the fire so that we would have plenty of ashes in which to r*oast our potatoes. AA T e were lying down in the shade Avhen wc heard the clop clop of horses hooves and Ave persuaded, the boys to give us a ride. HoAvevcr my sister and I decided to have our dinner before Ave had. a ride. The dinner was hurriedly cooked and as soon as avc Avcrc finished and the dishes Avere. washed, and put aAvay we. made a bee-line for the horses. AA'e Avere riding most of the afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. AA T c arrived home after tea at about fi o'clock,, tired and happy. Barbara Wallace On Avaking early Labour Day morning I looked, out of my Avindow, only to see a grey sky. Looking again I saw tints of blue herq and there, and hoped there would bj more later on. After donning my clothes and completing my toilet, I opened the door leading to the kitchen from Avhencc came the delicious aroma of hot porridge and toast, ft was not long before B had done my share to the. disappearing act. After breakfast I had another look ai the sky and saw that it Avas nearly all blue. Then going inside I helped mother Avith the Avork and as we had hot dinner I helped to prepare, the dinner. After dinner 1 dressed my little sisters in their best and set off to the pictures. I enjoyed it as it Avas an air picture and my brother is in the Air Force. Arriving home I minded my little, brother until tea-time, and after tea I helped Avith 'the dishes and Avent to bed. Noel Prince First J. got up and Avashed my face and hands. After that li fed the fowls, swept the porch and verandah and <ivi the table. Dad had come back from the factory now so avc bad our breakfast. Next, J; pumped up the tyres on the bike, and oiled it, immediately after I had done that I Avashed my hands and face, and changed into the clothes 1 was going to wear. I put the tin of food Mum was sending in a bag and started off. I had Rob on the back of the bike to take him round to Grandma's to play Avith Win and Ccdric. When I got there. Jocclyn was about to come Avith me Alo;ng we Avent changing bikes now and then as one of them Avas a funny old one. AATieu avc got to. the roafcl. that came down from the back roau where there was a girl supposed to be waiting for us, she Avas not there. We turned round the corner and
went to. see if .she was coming but she had gone away to her sister's place so we went all the way back again and turned towards the Mission house Avhich A\as in Ruatoki. When we came to the path leading up to the house Ave got oil and pushed our bikes up to the top of. the kill. We leant them up against a bank, i, took the tin of food out of the bag and, avc went up to the back door. We knocked and Miss Morgan came and let us jn. I gave Miss Morgan the. tin of food and she took it and said 'Thank you." Wc went out to the verandah and sat down on a seat near the ping-pong table. We had a* game of ping-pong Avhen we had cooled down a bit. We next had our dinner and alter dinner avc had a game of rounders. We went home after that. Pamela Burstall Looking put the window,, T beheld a promising sunny day for our popular holiday. Labour Day. I then hopped, out of. bed, and Avcnt doAvn to the sea Avith my sister for a hasty dip as avc avc re at that time staying at Ohope for the Aveek-end. The Avater being cold, Ave did not stay in that long then Ave went back to the bach and taking my tennis racquet T Avent doAvn to the courts t.i pass the morning away with my two friends Eunice and. Pauline. After dinner avc Avent down to the beach to watch the Scouts as they were having an afternoon at sports. That evening as avc sat round a blazing fire, avc all talked about our holiday; but Avhen the word 'school' was mentioned avc all as usual made a face. Call and collect your tickets. - I have decided that 1 will give free picture tickets to the other four essayists next Aveck and therefore there Avid be no competition this week.
