HAPPY OHOPE GATHERING WIJAKATANK AND OPOTIKL TROOPS Under Scoutmaster C. F. Thomas (Whakatane Scottish) and District Scoutmaster S. F. The local hoys marched over oi 5 Saturday morning and were joinet 1 by eleven Opotiki lads who hat . cycled over during the afternoon - On Sunday the whole camp attend ed the church service conducted bj : the Rev. Laughton » A hike later on in the day througl ' the native bush was. conducted bj '■ Mr Ken R unci man of the Native Dc partment. The event proved mosl i interesting and will be the basis ol a special competition for a 'bush-

- craft' prize later on. The'afternoon was made famou> I for the splendid complimentary 1 'spread' provided by Mr and Mrs W. 1 Hurst on the green lawns fronting i their residence at the northern end , of the beach. For their kindly in- » terest in the boys Mr and Mrs Hurst deserve the. -warmest praise, r The evening was .spent in the Cap- • tain's- Cabin Hall where the postt poned camplire 'sing song' took place ; and to be a very happy occasion both for the boys and the , large number of visitors who also attended. Monday- the final day was conspicuous for the wonderful sports meeting conducted by Mr W. Hurst with the help of committeemen and others on the sands. The spirit, of friendly- rivalry was. never absent and it is many years since Ohope echoed to cheering like that which greeted each final. The sports pennant for the patrol winning the most aggregate, points went to the 'Kiwi' troop (Scottish) under Patrol leader Malcolm Law. Details of the placings were:— "Kiwi" Patrol (Scottish) Ilß%pts 1; "Stag" (S) lOOpts 2; "Penguin" (S) oTiopts. 3; "Bellbird" (Citizens) 21pts 4; "Peewit" (S) 20pts 5; "Tui" (C) KHipts (5; "Kiwi" (C)) 7; "Pukeko" (C) (Pipts 8. The sports included the usual variety of Hat and novelty events which tested the lads to the utmost. The camp broke up last evening with hearty cheers for the camp supervisors, not forgetting the invaluable work of D.S.M. Miller who throughout superintended the culinary .section and provided the appetising menus in super-abundance.
