The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Tuesdays and Fridays. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1943 ALL IN THE FIGHT
BRITAIN and the people of the Old Country have always been generous in their praise of Dominion achievements and modest in the estimate of their own contributions to the world war. It may be, as Mr Nash has said, that this has led to "dangerously belittling- their own credit in the United States and elsewhere." Indeed, this may extend even to the Dominions themselves. It is necessary to keep the facts in correct perspective, and to recognise the diversity and width of the British war effort—in the munition factories, on sea, on land, and in the air, and in all theatres of war. Another aspect of the war effort should also be remembered. "There is a natural urge in Britain," says Mr Nash, "to show how New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa fight for the Old Country. We are not fighting for the Old Country in particular but for a little bit more. The tendency to over-emphasise that we: are "helping Britain" has survived from the days when the first contingents of colonial troops fought in Empire wars. Now we are still "helping Britain," but Britain is even more helping us in a war on which entirely depends our own future. We are all in the fight because the menace is to all, and nothing less than our all should be our contribution. Our effort must be compared, not with what others are doing, but with what our utmost endeavour could make it.
