TO FLIGHT-SERGEANT R. L. MARTIN, OF PAENGAROA

Details have come to hand of tlic award of the United States Air Medal to Flight-Sergeant Robert Lloyd Mar tin. son of Mr and Mrs R. L. Martin, of Paengaroa. The medal was given in recognition of the sterling work performed by him "while serving as a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force in the Pacific war /one. Flight-Sergeant Martin took part in numerous escort bombing missions, routine patrols, task force covers and one straffing attack. Hying frequently in the face of concentrated anti-aircraft (ire. On one occasion, after sighting three enemy lighters heading towards his group from abeam, lie dropped back to protect his flight leader and, taking advantage of the enemy's attack manoeuvre, (ired directly into the Zero's cockpit, causing the Japanese plane to explode and burst into flames. His skilful airmanship and determined lighting spirit contributed materially to the success of these vital missions.
