MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND TO Jit: SUBSIDISED An announcement that already £3850 had been received from Maoris J'or the proposed Ngarimu V.C. and 28th Maori Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund was made at the Ruatoria hui by Sir Apirana Ngata. He explained that the scholarship fund had been .suggested by pake ha residents of the district as a means of perpetuating the memory of the valour of Second-Lieutenant Ngarimu and the battalion and said, that it was hoped to obtain £7500. The sum already received came fr.om a limited area and the rest ol' New Zealand had still to be tapped. Sir Apirana received tfie promise of the Prime Minister, the lit. Hon. P. Eraser, while he was speaking that he would recommend to the Cabinet, that the Government should subsidise contributions pound I'or pound, up to £7500. The scholarship, .said Sir Apirana, would be open to every Maori child of every tribe in New Zealand, it being a matter for tlie Education Department, to advise the tribes as to the scope, terms and conditions of the scholarships. Legislation would be necessary to establish tlie fund and. set up a board of trustees, of which, perhaps, the Governor-Gen-eral of the day might be chairman. He also suggested that the scholarship be linked up with a knowledge of the. Maori language and in higher education with features of Maori culture.
