TROOPS ON EXERCISES
AN AWKWARD POSITION j A TYTHON INTERFERES A company of troops in the northwest of Australia was carrying out night exercises under their battalion commander. The men were in position waiting the Avord, to attack, when the battalion commander saw half a dozen matches, struck in quick succession. He turned on the. adjutant and demanded the reason. The adjutant inquired of the company commander, and the company commander sent for the platoon commander. After a brief, lurid! interview, the. platoon commander went in search of the offender. In effect, what he said to him when lie found him was: "Don't you know., Private Smith, that by striking matches you have given our position away and ruined the attack? If this were the rea' thing we might all have been dead by now." "Yes,. I know, sir," replied Private 1 Smith, "but what's a man to do when la 14ft python crawls over him in the dark?"
