LAND SALES ACT

OPPOSITION BY FARMERS AUCKLAND UNIONS ATTITUDE The question of the attitude to be adopted by the Auckland Provincial Farmers' Union in relation to the Servicemen's Settlement and Land Sales Act was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Provincial Executive, on September 15. It was reported by members of the Executive who were in Wellington recently that the Dominion President (Mr W. W. Mulholland) had made a request that the. Farmers' Union should take no part, in implementing the 'Land Sales Act. The President said that the question should be discussed carefully. They should, not arrive at a hasty decision from which they might have to retreat. 3n reply to a remark by Mr V. Simms (Otorohanga) on the question of members of the Union accepting positions on Rehabilitation Committees the President said that these committees at present were not operating the Land Sales Act.. Members of the Union who were occupying positions on Rehabilitation Committees, should retain them for the time being and until their duties clashed with their obligations to fellow farmers. After considerable discussion Mr Furniss moved, and Mr A. J. Campbell (Waikino) seconded: "That this Executive endorses the instruction from the Dominion Executive,, and, subject to ratification by that Exe-> cutive, calls upon all members of the Union in the Auckland Province to decline nomination to any Land Sales Committee or Court that may be established to implement the Act." Mr A. E. Bryant (Te Awamutu) moved the following amendment: — "That this Provincial Executive declines to nominate any member of | the Union to serve on any Land Sales Committee or Court established to implement the Act." This was lost. Mr Furniss's motion was then carried. On the motion of Mr A. Briscoe Moore, seconded by Mr J. W. Jones (Pakaraka) it was decided not to make any public announcement of the resolution until after September 25. —
