Airman's Mascot "Grounded"
Chum, veteran of bombing raids on Germany,, Norway and the French ports, has been grounded, says an article in the Royal New Zealand Air Force magazine, Contact. Flying at high altitudes! has affected his heart. Chum is a l'Oi year old cross between a sheep dog and a greyhound, and. mascot of his master. Many pilots became rivals for his companionship—among them being Flight-Sergeant Midd.leton, V.C., with whom he flew. Twice he has been dug out after crashes. Only once has he refused to fly. He Jumped out of an aircraft and could not be tempted to re-enter. That aircraft crashed .in flames.
