PREVENTING CRUELTY

S.P.C.A. INTEREST

COUNTY COUNCIL'S DECISION

Writ in jf the Whakatane County Council with reference to its recent letter regarding the. possibility of installing a permanent inspector 131 this district, the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals advises that Whakatane- is nob in the district covered by the Auckland group, though it would be will-, ing to co-operate, in any way possible. The assumption that each member is an honorary ranger was incorrect, although .subscribers were expected to report any cases of cruelty that came under their notice. The Society had also considered a letter from Mrs Tipper relating to the same; subject, and it had dccided that her communication be forwarded to the Federation of the Society for the. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals., which would in due course contact Mrs Tipper regarding the forming of a branch S.P.C.A. in Whakatane. Cr McGougan raised the same point which he spoke on at last meeting, that it seemed to him most unfair that a voluntary group had to be. formed before an inspector could be appointed and financed from its donations. Why could not the council simply appoint its own inspector if the ratepayers desired it. He realised that farming neighbours did not wish to go spying on each other,, but at the same time the. council should see that the animals received decent treatment. ~ The. chairman: I don't think any of our present officers could take it on. They have sufficient to do already. Cr McGougan: I'm not insinuating that but some inspector should be. appointed. Cr Luxton: We have the police of course, who will always act in a case of cruelty! The chairman: Quite true, but Cr McGougan is suggesting that the whole service ought to be nationalised.
