' * PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE )k - QUARTERLY MEETING HELD

The quarterly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Provincial Executive was held in the County Council Board Room on Wednesday, August 18, Mrs Grace presiding. After the reading of the Creed, the president welcomed the delegates, apologies were received from Opotiki branch and from Mrs Smith, Te Teko, Mrs Lee Wilson, Awakeri, and Mrs Mitchell,, Taneatua. There were present Mesdames Grace, Grey, Hill and. Prince, Taneatua; Barr, Haultain and Dodunski, Awakeri; Gibbs, Collins., King, Murupara; and Goodwin, Te Teko. The secretary read the minutes which were confirmed. The correspondence. was read and discussed. Members felt that the replies to representations made re freight on wool and better medical facilities for Murupara, were on the whole favourable. The secretary was instructed to write to Headquarters thanking them for help and cooperation in bringing these matters to the notice of the department concerned. Mrs Gibbs, Murupara, reported on the position of the employees who had been replaced by conscientious

objectors. The situation was improved, some of the shepherds etc. being back in their homes, and some of the conscientious objectors being returned to camp or going to the Forestry Gamps. Mrs Gibbs also read a letter she had received about the request for better telephonic communication in their district. The department. wa§. prepared to supply telephones if the settlers wished to erect their lines,, and provide their own poles and wire. Mrs Grace read an extract from the New Zealand Herald re weight of bread and the matter was discussed. After some discuasion on the matter Mrs Haultain proposed that the secretary write to Headquarters asking them to write to the Minister, asking if a reduction could be made on the fares of High School boarders coming home for holidays. It was felt that as High School pupils travelled at reduced rates on trams, and on trains as day pupils, that this reduction was not too

much to ask for. Seconded -by 'Mrs Gibbs and carried. Mrs Dodunski proposed that the secretary write to Headquarters asking them to bring to the notice of the Minister of Supply, the extreme shortage of children's clothing in the shops and. asking .that more supplies be made available. In this district, children's clothes, especially small children's clothes; are almost unprocurable- Seconded by Mrs Gibbs and carried. Mrs Grey proposed that in the, event of any matter needing urgent attention during meetings, that the president and secretary have power to act. Seconded by Mrs Haultain and carried. Mrs Gibbs asked, if the meetings could be arranged for a Wednesday in future, if possible, as they hoped a bus from Murupara to Whakatane would be running shortly. Mrs Grace asked if she could be relieved of her duties as president as her health would not permit of her carrying out her duties as she "would wish. Mrs Barr proposed Mrs Grey, Mrs Dodunski seconded.. Mrs Haultain proposed Mrs Goodwin, Mrs Grey seconded. An election resulted in Mrs Grey being elected. Mrs Goodwin on behalf of Mrs Elvers read an extract, from the. New Zealand Herald re deaths and injuries to school children alighting from buses. The Te Teko branch desired the secretary to write to Headquarters asking them to. support the fciorotoe/t- In h;is{ (suggested amendments to the law. The Housekeeping Secretary, Mrs Mitchell, was unable to be present but her report, was read, by Mrs Grace. A discussion ensued on wages stamps., As Taneatua was the only branch who sent in nominations for delegate to F.U. meetings, Mrs Mitchell was appointed to attend the next meeting. Mrs Grey and Mrs Haultain, delegates to the conference, told of their experiences, and. discussed some of the. remits. They told the meeting of the two properties under consideration for a Rest Home and also of "The Dr Lec case." More of these two matters will be heard later. Mrs Grace proposed that Mrs Haultain, Mrs Grey and Mrs Goodwin be a sub-committee to deal with the Dr Lee case. Seconded J)y Mrs Hill." Delegates to the conference wished the secretary to write to Mrs Smith, Dominion Secretary to congratulate her on work

for, and her great inteest in. the Division and particularly on the election procedure she has worked out. The matter of Country Education was brought up and discussion ensued. Members were agreed it was desirable that more interest should be shown in this- subject and. that other districts were ahead of us in this, respect. Arrangements had been made for members to lunch together at. the Daffodil Tearooms and this arrangement was generally enjoyed. The meeting then closed.

BAY OF PLENTY EXECUTIVE

SOUTH ISLAND REST HOME

An extra meeting of the Bay oi ; Plenty Provincial Executive was held in the County Council Board Room on Wednesday 25<th August at 2 p.m. The meeting was opened Avith the reading of the Creed. Mrs Grey the new president welcomed delegates and thanked tliem for electing her. Apologies were received from Murupara and from Mrs Lee Wilson and Mrs Smith. Mrs Hill moved that copies of minutes be sent to "The Countrywoman' 1 ' and "The Bay of Plenty Beacon." Seconded by Mrs Haultain and carried. The meeting had been called to consider the question of purchasing a Rest Home in the South. Island. Two properties were under consideration. One Te Kiteria, near Waimate., purchase price £1800 ready for occupation,. the other, Melrose. Nelson, which Colonel and Mrs Adams had, offered to the Division, as a gift, but which would need renovating to some extent before being ready for use. The president gave particulars of these, properties and asked for discussion. Delegates asked to vote for one or both of these houses. Mrs Haultain proposed that the Division acquire one Rest Home in the South Island. Seconded by Mrs Hill and carried.

Mrs Hill proposed that as a Provincial Executive, we vote in favour of purchasing Te Kiteroa. Seconded by Mrs Goodwin and carried. Members although deeply appreciating Colonel and Mrs Adams generosity in offering this beautiful home to the Division, felt that the more central position of the Waimate property was greatly in its favour.

Mrs Haultain proposed that the Secretary be authorisel to purchase a case to hold, the executive papers. Seconded by Mrs Grey and carried.

Mrs Hauitain proposed that the Housekeeping Secretary be granted £1 for housekeeping expenses. Seconded by Mrs Hill and carried.

Mrs Haultain proposed that in view of queries from Branch Housekeeping Secretaries re Housekeepers, the President and Secretary discuss housekeeping matters with Mrs Mitchell and that they also appoint a Deputy Housekeeping Secretary. Seconded by Mrs Barr and carried. The result' of this consultation was that Mrs Prince was appointed Deputy Housekeeping Secretary.

Mrs Prince proposed that as Mrs Grace had retired from the position of president that the name of Mrs Grey, the new president, be added to the Advisory Members. Seconded jy Mrs Goodwin and carried.

There were present Madams Grey (in the chair), Wilson, Haultain, Barr and Dodunski., Awaken; Goodwin and Jamieson, Te Teko; and Hill, Anderson, Bennett and Prince, Taneatua. TE TEKO BRANCH MEETS Owing to the wet weather the preceding week the Te Teko branch of the Women's Division of ■ the Farmers' Union held its monthly meeting on September 21. The meeting opened with the Creed after Avhich the president gave an interesting talk, relating to the three, sub-division meetings she had attended the preceding month. Members then discussed the possibilities of a birthday party, and as Mrs Orr (president from Wellington) is expected next month, and has one day available (October 14) for either Awakeri or Te Teko, it was moved and seconded, that wc club in with Awakeri for the occasion, their hall and conveniences being much superior. Discussion then turned to garden parties, the idea being to hold one in November, as a birthday and final for the year. A committee meeting to be held on Octobcr 19 to finalise arrangements.
