HILLCREST CEMETERY
POSSIBLE HIGHWAY ROUTE
BOROUGH COUNCIL'S DISCUSSION
Notification from, the County Council that there was a chance of tlie proposed East Coast Main Highway taking a route right through the centre, of the new Hillcrest cemetery caused eyebrows to be raised at the Borough Council meeting last Monday. "I can't understand it," said His AA'orship, "the proclamation, vesting the area as a cemetery site came from the chief survey office and if there was anything like that surely they would have notified us."
Cr Shapley said he had boon over the area with the Borough toreman and it appeared that even if the proposed route were followed it would not spoil the cemetery plan or layout. It could still- be used for burial purposes each side of the road. The Town Clerk asked what name the new cemetery was to be known as. He had .started to call it the Mokovua cemetery. The Mayor: LcL us think about it l'or a month.
