NOT IN THIS TOWN!
WHEN a certain candidate in Whakatane was severely criticising the daily press of this country and illustrating' how statements and facts had been deliberately misconstrued in order to mislead the reading public, it was refreshing to note the interjection which rose from the rear of the hall "not in Whakatane!" We have to thank the interjector for his timely remark for though it is the duty of the press to be present at public meetings it is not permitted to reply to any criticism other than through the medium of its own columns. Though we appreciate the fact that the candidate was not referring' to the smaller papers, we nevertheless take a certain pride in the fact that ati least one person saw fit not to allow the remark to pass without a word in defence of the local paper. It has ever been our unswerving policy to give a fair hearing to all sections of the community and in this endeavour we trust we have succeeded. Should however we have been unconsciously unfair in any of our reports or criticisms we would deem it a favour if this would be pointed out to us and we will not hesitate to set it right either by correction or frank explanation.
