SCOUTS AND GUIDES
THE annual meetings of both Citizens and Scottish Scout Troops which have been held recently, together with the forthcoming fixture for the local Girl Guides directs attention to the remarkable manner in which these movements have consolidated in spite of the war. If we were to draw any guage from other distdicts we would be prepared to see the distinct falling off in the: various troops but to-day in the town area at least we can point to approximately one hundred and fifty boys and girls undergoing training. This figure includes of course Cub Pack and Brownies who are the potential Scouts and Guides of the future. To have maintained this fine standard which definitely places Whakatane in the leading position of the Bay of Plenty, we have to credit the officers and committees behind both movements and in doing so, may we express the hope that they will long continue with the good work.
What Ist it ! A reader living on the Plains lias questioned us about the identification' of a bird which was seen in the vicinity of his home. About the size of a fantail, it had, lie said, a larger head with a black beak, black plumage, with the exception of a white stomach sharply defined against the black. The wings were black and white and the tail narrow., though slightly fanned. The legs were long and spindly. Can any of our readers assist in defining the bird as we. have to confess ourselves completely cornered.
[ Ohope's Bowling; Green. | Specimens of Ohope's greatness I toiled and sweated in the sun over the. week-end when a group of enthusiasts formed themselves into a working bee lor the purpose of levelling a section ol' ground near the southern recreation reserve, as a, future bowling green. The prospective club is, we understand already strong as far as membership is concerned and if the action ive observed on Saturday is any guage, it should be a most progressive organisation. The greens should do much to enhance the attraction of the hitherto neglected Ohiwa end.
