LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION

MILK FOR MUS THOMPSON This certainly gave, you all a 10l of mental exercise . but T am surprised at the number of excellent answers, that have reached me, and quite a-number of them right too. Now let's have.'a look at the competition. The "question was: — Mrs Thompson ordered four quarts of milk from her milkman, who had eight quarts in his can, but no measure by which he could measure it. Mrs Thompson had two jugs, one able to lio'ld three quarts' and the other five quarts. The milkman said that he could not. measure four quarts with these, but Mrs Thompson's little boy Charlie, showed him how to do it. How did he do it? Now the correct answer is this: —• He tilled the 3-quart jug from the milkman's can and then poured it into the 5-quart jug. He then filled the 3-quart jug again from the can and from it filled up the ;">-quarl jug, leaving 1-quart in the 3-quart jug. Now he emptied, the 5-quart jug back into the milkman'* can and pouretl the 1-quart in the 3quart jug into the a-quart jug and then by filling up the 3-quart jug again from the milkman's can he was able to simply pour it into the 5-quart jug making its contents, hey presto—just the four quarts required.

Now that was a real brain teaser which would have given even father and mother a bit of head scratching which reminds me of a joke told me. the other day—lf you had a shilling and a buggy-top what would you do? Answer was, buy a finetoothed comb! Work it out my lads and. lassies,, work it out. At any rate here are. the ■winners: Helen McLean Betty Wilson Charlie Pettit Seine of the. others worked it out a much longer way while others just guessed half way measures, or marked the height of the milk. Any how eongrats also to Leith Stewart, Pam Johnston, Ceei'ly Sullivan, Kathleen Dick johu, and Gtu-"> >an/ill who though they do not win tickets made an excellent solution out £:>r themselves.
