PERSONAL
Sgt Pilot Gordon Jackson, a former member of the Beacon staff with Mrs Jackson, are at present spending a few dajvs in Whakatane. They have been staying at the Commercial Hotel. Friends of L.A.C. Pat Butler, R.N.Z.A.F., son of Mr and Mrs J. J. Butler of Domain Road. Whakatane,. will be pleased to hear of his promotion to wireless operator-air gnnner Sergeant. Sgt Butler is stationed at Fingall, Toronto, Canada. Mr and Mrs Roy Gray and family of Kcrerutahi Station, Ku tare re, have recently returned from a holiday in Hamilton and Te Awamutu j where they met many old friends and relations. They were the guests of Mr and Mrs W. A. Gray of Solium, Te Awamutu. Mr and Mrs Athol Wallace, of Merrit Street, Whakatane, received word that their son Ken, has been promoted Warrant Officer in the R.N.Z.A.F. Warrant Officer Wallace who enlisted in 19401 as. A.fr Gunner, went overseas to Egypt and, then to British East Africa. He was invalided home and. engaged in instructional duties, at several N.Z. stations before proceeding to the South Pacific war zone. He writes that he has a high regard for the American airmen he is serving with, but has the highest admiration for the New Zealand ground staff in the islands who he says arc performing a wonderful job keeping the machines airworthy and up to standard under what are sometimes most difficult, conditions.
