RANGITAIKI TEAM OUTCLASSED HURUNUI-APANUI SHIELD The. Rotorua Rugby football representatives scored their third successive win in tie Fence oC the Te Hurnnui Apanui Shield at Arawa Park on Saturday when they decisively defeated Rangilaiki by IS points to f>. The match, was played in Ideal weather and there was a very large, attendance. The teams •wore: — Rolorua (all black): Johnson, Spivey, Davis, McKcnzic, (ioddard, Hooper, Aliipeno, Henderson, Reid, Jacobs. Ramvhero, Andrews, Muir, Hapeta, Robertson. Rangitaiki (blue and ])laek): Anderson, Rcneta, Penny, Ohapata, Ratima, Barr, Kaipara, Howell, Phillips,, Scliooncr, Gardiner, Hall, Parks,, Kαkaho, Nathan. Tlie standard of play, was, from a representative point of view disappointing,, both teams, handling badly and the backs showing little co-ordination. The teams appeared evenly matched in weight, with the advantage, if any, resting with Rotorua. The highlight of the match came about halfway through the second spell when Rotorua were defending desperately about, ten yards from their own goal line. Rauwhcro snapped up the ball and making some ground sent the ball on to Davis'.. The latter made a good 15 yards before pasing out to T. Andrews a few yards in from the side line.. Andrews, .sprinting hard down the sideline, raced right, round the Rangitaiki fullback to score a great tryunder the posts. McKcnzie scored Rotorua's first try about ten minutes after the kick-off, but it was really Henderson's try, who dribbled, the ball upficld in a fine solo run. Ahipene missed, the kick. Henderson's turn came a few minutes later when he scored a nice try near the posts. Hapela converted. Just before halflime Phillips, Rangitaiki, landed a great penalty goal from just inside the half-way mark. The half-time .score was Rotorua S, Rangital'ki 3. PI aj' livened up slightly in the J second half, but Rotorua remained definitely on top and Rangitaiki were lucky to keep the score as low as it was. Rangitaiki were being awarded numerous penalties but none was taken advantage of. Spivey and T. Andrews scored tries for Rotorua in the second spell, Hapeta converting both. Phillips kicked another penalty goal for Rangitaiki. The final score, was: Rotorua 18, Rangitaiki 6. Mr G. Burt was referee. CLUB FINAL In the final of the Senior Club competition last Saturday AVaimana beat Taneatua by 9 points to nil. This concludes the round played under the AVhakatane Rugby Union, which, though it may not have bceii spectacular yet served to fill the gap and provide a certain amount of interest for followers of the game.
