WORK FOR MONTH

RED CROSS-PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE WHAKATANE ACTIVITIES The monthly meeting of the Red Cross-Patriotic Committee took place in the Borough Council Chambers on August 10 at 2 p.m. therewas a fair attendance, with Mrs W. Sullivan in the chair; For the V.A.s Miss Righton said in Mrs Prideaux's absence, that the? V.A.s were very busy just now. Arrangements were in hand for the* forthcoming visit to Wha'katane' of Miss Crooke- Director-General of Red Cross V.A.s. It was hoped that the Junior Red Cross members would also attend the meeting.

Mrs Sullivan urged members, to da ■ all they could to remind old members to pay their annual subscriptions and to enroll new members. The membership was falling off instead of increasing, as it should. This was not due to any of interest in Red Cross but. seemed to be mainly due to forge tfufness. Subs could be paid at the Red Cross shop. Mrs Moran suggested that each member carry one or two membership cards, and on- " deavour to sign up a new member as the opportunity arose. Lady Galway Guild: Mrs Moran asked for soft toys that could be" packed into odd corners of the cases of clothing. They were, enormously appreciated, by children and would take up little space. Many toys rejected by their young owners could be repaired by the Guild, and would perhaps help to cheer up some desolate child. Sewing Circle: Mrs Ramson has two cases packed, she stated,: containing 24 pairs pyjlmas and four drcsing gowns. Thirteen pairs of completed pyjamas had been returned by the Institute, and the. subcentres of Te Te'ko and Edgecumbe had taken live pairs each and Matata six pairs. Knitting: Mrs Timbs supplied the following 'list of. articles made up for Patriotic: One pair bedsocks, 14 pairs mittens, 2 sleeveless pullovers, 4 pairs socks, 31 scarves, and 21 balaclavas. For the Entertainment Committee Mrs E. Armstrong reported that one man had been farewelled during; the month. The committee had assisted with the supper at the Welcome Home function held at the Winter Show Buildings for men,on leave, from overseas, also with ••'thesupper for the smoko-o. They had. supplied and served supper for the members of the Edgecumbe Concert Party. In the absence of Mrs Shapley, Mrs Norman reported that the Comforts Committee would be packing; parcels soon and would be grateful for material for packing the parcels . in. Cretonne, floor bags, etc. were suitable. Mrs Norman has despatched a parcel of old linen to Sister* Lucas in the Middle East and woukfc like some more linen to completer another case. ■; Mrs Sullivan said that the. shop had raised £141 15s for Red Crosssince the last meeting. Mrs Eggers agreed to undertake the duties of shop convener for a period. Discussion took place over the reI cent visit of convalescent Americans*. Ito Wnakatane. The secretary wast instructed to write to the American Red Cross in Wellington suggesting that future parties be. sent by the "Limited," thence by train: to Rotorua, and so on to Whakalane by road to avoid such a long and. tedious journey. Letters of thankswere also to be sent to Red CrossCommittees at Hamilton and Rotorua for their assistance to our visitors en route. The girls of the Reel Cross Transport in Hamilton had. turned out at. 4 a.m. to meet the men at Frankton, taken them to a; private home for some rest, ami* later in the day called fof them and* drove them around Hamilton.' Ifo. was also agreed that when the next* Americans are expected that pros-* pective hostesses shall meet and dis-» cuss plans for the men's entertainment. This would avoid overlapping of invitations and inconvenience tortile hostesses. This concluded the meeting: ■ __j__ „_._■ UUIBB .
