BAY REPS. NARROWLY BEATEN GAME AGAINST TAURANGA The first game of the High School team which will shortly represent the Bay of Plenty against Sacred Heart College, was played last Saturday at Tauranga in teeming rain, with the ground in very bad condition. The opposing side, Tauranga Third Grade Reps, had a much heavier pack, whose spoiling qualities accounted for many promising rushes. The teams were:— School (blue): O'Brien (Tauranga), Sloane (Whakatane), Booth (Tauranga)., Goodall (Whakatane), Ncttlingham (Kati'kati), Grigg (Tauranga), Wetini (Whakatane), Harawera (Tauranga), Raureti (Whakatane), Boswell (Whakatane), Hume (Katikati), Stewart (Tauranga)., Nicholls (Tauranga), Rewiti (Tauranga) . The School line got hold of the ball right at the. statft, and a sweeping rush took them into Reps. 25 where a set scrum took place. Hooking the ball neatly, Sloane fed the School 1 backs who tore, across the field in, a passing rush. At the far side Nicholls centred, O'Brien gathered in and plunged across the line giving the blues first blood. Wilkinson's kick fell short. Back at half-way, Tauranga followed the ball down into School's quarter, Wells leading the rush. A tight scrum took place from which Goodall emerged ball at toe, and ploughed upheld keeping it well under control. A penalty kick against School followed and Tauranga once again forced play to the blue's quarter. Fortunately Rewiti was safe and lined well. Surging into Reps. 25 some fast open play took place and Wilkinson all but made, a touchdown, but Smith beat him to it and half-time found the S'core 3 nil' in School's favour. Wilkinson led the next attack and a penalty kic'k in Tauranga's 25 followed. Smith was in a good position for a mark but Stewart intercepted. Racing across the fiekl he dodged the. wing and dived over the I line, bringing School's score to 6. The kidlc went wide. t immediately play moved into, the blue's quarter,, and an excellent penalty kick by Kakau brought the score, to G-3. Some fast action followed, Harris leading the Reps. Besten followed up fast and taking a nice pass dived over the line to score Tauranga's first touchdown. Corbett converted. For the remaining few minutes of the game School was kept well occupied defending their goal line,, Rewiti bringing off some clever saves.
