POPULAR DANCE

OTAKIRI WELCOME HOME 0 ! LOCAL SOLDIERS HONOURED On Thursday evening last the residents of Otakiri and surrounding districts turned out in force to do honour to local soldiers returned on furlough. The dance was organised by the Farewell and Welcome Homo Committee. The hall was tastefully decorated for the 1 occasion by the members of the Otakiri Women's Institute who arc to be congratulated on the help given to. the dance committee in their effort. The Gaiety Boys orchestra supplied, excellent music for the dancers,, and Mr Lord acted as M.C. Members of the Wlialkatane Pipe Band were present and gave excellent, support to the most important part of the programme that of offically welcoming the 1 guests of the evening. Messrs G. Revell and R. Wallcn and two comrades, Private Creswell and. Hicky •were piped up to the platform, also members of. the Returned Soldiers Association. Apologies and good wishes were received from the- President and Secretary of the R.S.A. Whakatane. Mr W. J. Murray as president of the local Patriotic Committee, extended the district's good wishes and a hearty welcome to the boys. Mr Mullins on behalf of the R.S.A. also spoke briefly of the achievements of the second N.Z.E.F. and its connection with the R.S.A. Mr Dunning, chairman of the Farewell and Welcome Home Committee,, then presented the local | men with a donation which hod been subscribed by the district for the occasion. The men were accorded musical honours. j At intervals during the speeches, songs were sung by Mrs Morrison j and to those listeners who really! enjoy good, singing and good music. Mrs Morrison's rendering of. "For England" and "Home Sweet Home" were delightful interludes. To the ladies went the honours for the l delicious supper, which was served and the ladies on their part express grateful thanks to the many well wishers who sent cakes etc.
