THE HARBOUR FRONT
NEW FACING WALL PLAN FOR liEHABfLITATI<QN The need for constructing a new Taelng wall' on the river frontage from the old wharf at Bridgers furniture factory to the new wharf has been under consideration by the Harbour Board, for some time. Reporting on the suggestion the consulting engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, said that lie had to take into consideration the impossibility of procuring reinforcing steel during the. war period. He states: "Alter considerable investigation and thought. I have come to the. conclusion that a concrete block type with tongue and groove would be the most suitable and least likely to fail under adverse conditions. This should be built at a slight inclination to the vertical on top of a mass concrete foundation varying in depth according to the: difference in bottom foundation met with. It would have [ a cap of concrete and the wall should have a backing of rubble placed in position as the walli was built. At the boat shed a plain reinforced concrete wall Avould be necessary along its entire length. The blocks would, be bonded with cement mortar and a rough Sketch setting out the general idea of the wall. I will attend your next meet- j ing so that the matter can be further discussed. I regret the long delay -in attending to this matter but owing to pressure of army work 1 have had no opportunity of attending to it. until the present time. The estimated cost of the work is 10 chains of wall at £125 per chain or a total cost of £2000." The board deckled to adopt the scheme as one of its. items of. its rehabilitation programme.
