WEDDING BELLS

KNOWLES-MERRIE

A marriage of local interest was solemnised between Elva Mae,, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs G. H. Merrie, Taneatua, and Bombardier Eric Charles Knowles (on furlough) elder son of Mrs' E. Knowles,, Onehunga, on Monday evening, August 2, at the Presbyterian Church, Taneatua, by the Rev. R. P. Steele. The church was artistically decorated by Miss Maida McGougan with daphne and violets. A bell made with jonquils, was, suspended from the centre of an archway of flowers under which the couple stood during the ceremonj% Mrs Holloway presided at the organ. The bride escorted by her father made a charming picture in a dusky rose i'rodk and fur toque. She: carried a bouquet of pink stock, rosebuds and asparagus fern, with a silver horseshoe attached. The bridesmaids, Mis.s Jeanne Du Ponte and Miss Mavis Wardlaw, (cousin of the bride) were dressed in biue and carried bouquets of deep pink cnmclias. They also wore very attractive toques made entirely with daphne. The duties of best man were abb T carried out by the bridegroom's- brother, Cpl Jack Knowles, while the bride's brother, Pte G. W. (Bill) Merrie acted as groomsman. During the signing of the register W/0 ! J. Denham rendered a solo, "I'll Walk Beside You." When the happy couple left, the church they passed through a Guard of' Honour formed by members of the Armed Forces returned on furlough. v! At the reception held hv the Taneatua Hall, the bride's mother received her guests in a black ensemble and carried a posy of orange calendulas. Mrs E. Knowles, mother of the bridegroom, also wore, a black ensemble and carried a posy of marigolds. During the reception Mrs Reg. Thompson entertained, the guests with a song which was much appreciated. After the reception the hall was cleared and a dance held to which many young people of the district, were invited. Mrs Reg. Thompson again rendered a solo, "Just a Song at Twilight." Later the happy couple left by ear amidst showers of confetti,, the bride wearing her wedding frock, a fur coat and toque wit-h accessories to match.
