RACING NOTES

MAY RISE SUPERIOR

Renascor, last year's winner of the Grand National Hurdles, like many others, ran disappointingly at the Wellington fixture. One southern writer states lie performed as if lie had not recovered from the effects of his Great Northern while another is of the opinion that at. Trentham he did not appear to be keen on the l job. Thus has Renascor been discounted, but it is worthy of note; that many good horses similarly referred to, have quickly risen superior to adverse criticism, and the Musketoon representative is just the solid .type to do so, perhaps in no uncertain manner.

BROTHER TO EDNA'S BIRTHDAY A rising two year old brother to Edna's Birthday has, just joined C. Sagar's team at Trentham. He was bred by Mr F. B. Donnelly, and purchased at the National Sales by Mr F. C. Christian, owner of the successful candidate Prince Shad. HAWKE'S BAY PROMINENT During the present season Hawke's Bay horses have won in stakes: at Trentham, New Zealand's most difficult course, a total of £11,000. The province promises to be prominent again next season, not only at Trentham, but in other racing centres of the Dominion. THREE YEAR OLDS IN FRONT Of the sixteen events at the Wellington meeting six were won by three year olds, viz: Lcnardo (2), La Fillette, Flying Ace, Brovcinc and Peter Gregor. OPENING OF THE SEASON The new racing season will be opened with the Grand National meeting at Riccarton, while there will also be racing at Hastings and Paeroa. STRAIGHT BAT SOLD The thoroughbred mare, Straight Bat, by Cricket Bat—Winsome Hind, has been purchased from the Clifford Estate by Mr D. W. J. Gould, of Christchurch. JUST A MATTER OF HEALTH Thus a southern writer: "The number of weight-for-age races in Victoria at spring time is an inducement for Mr Fitzgerald to take Kindergarten over to "the other side." He would only have to be saddled up in his usual state of health to clean the board. WELL UP TO TIME Town Survey and Kronos, who are engaged at. the Grand National meeting arrived at Riccarton early last week and will therefore have the advantage of knowing the racing track. WHAT'S IN A NAME The Coronach—Brown Pearl yearling purchased this month by Mr J. D. McDougall, of Wairarapa, at 500 guineas, has: been given the euphonious title of Tomahawk. A RIDING RETAINER The successful Canterbury rider, C. T. Wilson, has accepted, a retainer for next season to ride Mrs S. T. Edmonds' Hawke's Bay team. A RAPID RECOVERY When Chat sustained an injury while competing in the Wellington Steeplechase it was deemed to be of a serious nature. However, the game and clever jumper quickly made a recovery, and she is again in slow work in view of the Grand National Steeplechase, in which she has been allotted 10.8. REJECTED The remit of the Gore Racing Club to prevent the inclusion of trotting events in racing club programmes -was unanimously rejected by the New Zealand Racing Conference. EXIT DEFOE The successful sire, Defoe, had to be destroyed last week through being affected with parahsis. FOR SPRING RACING Boulder Dam, who was allowed to miss his Trentham engagement, is expected to be in rare trim for spring racing. TRIFOX CHANGES'HANDS The Hawke's Bay sportsman. Mr C. Slater, lias disposed of his Foxbridge—Lady Till colt, Trifox, to Mr Walter Ilume of Trentham. He will occupy the box recently vacated by Deolali.

THE NATIONAL MEETING Early favourites for the Grand National Steeplechase are Noko, Dozie Boy and Abbey, Lu. For the Winter Cup Aletliea. Ivronos, Fairy 13ard are. the leading fancies, while, Town Survey, Colibri and Iveuascoi are in request for the National Hurdles. THE RIDING CHAMPIONSHIP W. F. Ellis now leads lor the Jockeys' championship this season with 11 wins, one j)oint. ahead of W. J. Brougliton. The latter was llic Dominion's most successful jockey for the previous four seasons. The only meeting to be held, before the end of the current racing season is that of the South Canterbury Jockey Club. Ellis will be riding at the fixture, while Broughlon may not be able to obtain leave from the military camp.
