MINISTER'S REPLY

DETAINEES' DRIVERS LICENSES POSITION AT GALATEA In reply to a question asked by Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., in the House regarding the issuing of drivers licenses to men from the military defaulters camp, now stationed at Galatea, the Minister of Lands, Hon. J. G. Barclay, gave the following reply:— The position is that some good-conduct defaulters were transferred from Strathmore to Galatea to undertake necessary and useful work there. Five of these defaulters had previously had truck drivers licenses issued by the Rotorua County Council in connection "with their work on Strathmore, but the Whakatane County Council had 1 refused application by the National Service Department for the renewal of these licenses, and apparently its sole ground l is that the men are defaulters. Galatea is a very big estate, the road traversing it being thirteen miles long, SO that it is obvious that transport must be provided. The defaulters work in a group, under constant supervision and ARE NOT allowed off the estate.
