RACING NOTES
THAMES WINTER MEETING The Thames Jockey Club's Winter Meeting will he staged at Pacroa on Saturday, August. 7. ! A FINE STAYER The Muskctoon gelding, lien as co r, winner ol' the. 1942 Grand National Hurdles, is engaged in the race this year. At the Ellerslie meeting in June he iinished a close third to Town Survey and Colibri, and at RLccarton meets them on decidedly better terms. Rider Tito will be (looking forward to a successful ride. A STABLE ADDITION The most recent addition to Mrs E.' M. Sloane's Te Rapa team is the jumper Irish Morn by Illumination —Gold Morn. Last weak he finished fourth in the Te Aro Hurdles at Trentliam. finishing on well. ANOTHER SALE The South Island galloper, Sing Sing, who had a very bad run in his Trentliam first, day engagement, has been purchased by a Wellington sportsman., and will now be trained by B. Burgess at Awapuni. VERY UNFORTUNATE The. brilliant southern candidate. Pri-nce Shad, was a strong favourite {in the early betting for the Wellington Wliyte Handicap. He was given a gallop at Trentliam just after his arrival from South and unfortunately knuckled over. He was shipped home the same. v day, and will have to be allotted a lengthy spell. A REAL BARGAIN Young Charles wlm scored a convincing win over the battens at Te Rapa in. May last, repeated the performance at. Trentliam, a much more difficult feat, was purchased last year for the munificent sum of 22% guineas, so his winning account is showing quite a good credit balance.
THE MELBOURNE CUP New Zealand horses nominated for the Melbourne Cup are Kindergarten, Dominate, The Joker and Amorlad. Dominate is now owned by Mr John Wren of Australia, ami if the Phaleron Bay representative prevails the victory will have to be credited to Melbourne. | GETTING READY Hunting King has been kept well up to his work at Ellerslie lately and promises to be. in the pink toif form for the Pakuranga meeting. SPENDTHRIFT'S FAILURE Messrs Hazlett Bros Spendthrift was thought to be a better proposition than Noko in the Wellington Steeples, and the latter was therefore, left in his box. The elect, however, did nothing right for he ran about at his fences, and three furlongs from home had had enough. This particular performance does not. mean that Spendthrift is a second rater, for even better horses have been effectively pulled up by the Trentham winter sticky track. DIVIDING THE TEAM The. Hon. E. Davis and Mr O. Nicholson, of Auckland, have divided their Takanini team, by sending three members cf it to C. S. Thompson at Awapuni. They are Te Kawiti, Egyptian Lady and a rising two year old.. TRANSPORT ARRANGED Shipping accommodation for the transport of Kindergarten to Australia has been arranged by his owner, Mr E. Fitzgerald. The latter stales, however, that the horse will not be started in the Melbourne Cup.with a prohibitive weight as he does not intend that the heart of a good horse should be broken iu a contest of two miles. NAMES REGISTERED The black filly by Foxbridge— Golden Princess a full sister to Regal Fox,, has been named Princess Fox, and the bay colt by Silver Stick—Miss Brierly will racc in the name of Silver Pere. A CONSISTENT HURDLER Mr W. S. Goosman's Town Survey is now proving his consistency, or be has to his credit in winter racing the. Great Northern. Hurdles and Wel'ington July Hurdles. His ■icxt big attempt will be in the Grand Nat'ona Hurdles at Rieearton -ext month, and even with increased weight liis chance of winning is quite a good one.
TOTALISATOR INCREASE | Increases in totalisator are still being registered in different parts of the Dominion. At the Wellington meeting the total amount invested was £322,757, an increase of £122,203 over last year. THE RIDING CHAMPIONSHIP At the Wellington meeting W. J. Broughton registered three wins, and for the season's jockey championship is now level with W. F. Ellis. BISCUIT IMPROVING In the running of the July Steeples at Trentliam Biscuit led for a considerable part of the journey, but was beaten a length by Noko in the final run. In winning the Hack and Hunters' Steeples at Tc Rapa in May Biscuit showed promising crosscountry capability and next season may show to advantage among the front rankers over the big fences. FOR NATIONAL HONOURS The Canterbury candidate, Treasurer, a Winter Cup winner, is at present schooling exceptionally well over the battens. He is looked upon as a sure starter in the. Grand National Hurdles, which day by day assumes a more open aspect. STILL A GOOD PROSPECT Landveyor is good in wet going, but does not like it as heavy as it was at Trentham. His fourth in the Parliamentary Handicap was there-, fore a good performance.. Before the winter is over lie may have the opportunity of again registering his Auckland Easter Handicap form, when he traversed the mile in 1.37 2-5.
THE WINTER CUP It is quite likely that Monte. Cristo's engagement in the Winter Cup may be gone on with and in liis present condition he is likely to run a great, race, for Riccarton is never in an extremely heavy state. THE RICCARTON COURSE The Musketoon representative, Renascor, was solidly backed to win the Wellington Hurdles, but failed to act in the heavy clay. His supporters will doubtless rely on him to win the National Hurdles, on a course that he can handle; to advantage.
