Plunket Society The Borough Council has agreed to repeat its donation of £20 which was made last year to the loqfal branch of the N.Z. Plunket Society. Orphanage Street Collection' The Whakatane Borough Council has authorised the Auckland Orphanages United Council, a body representing 15 orphanages, to hold a street collection in this town on Friday, October 22. Returned Men as Guests The management of the Regent and Grand Theatres has extended an open invitation to men now on furlough from the Middle East to attend any or all of their programmes for the next month, as guests. Offer of £5 "ITII be only too glad to start a subscription list with £5,, in order to give these boys on leave a real decent welcome home dinner in an hotel," declared one local businessman to a Beacon representative yesterday. Bobby Calf Pens Farmers are asked to be mindful of the comfort of bobby calves during the present spell of wet weather. A bedding of, hay will do much towards keeping the calves warm in their pens until picked, up and will also ensure a better stat<? of health for the calves when travelling. To-morrow's* Football Match The old rivals, Whakatane. and Rangitaiki, will to-morrow be combining in an unofficial match to determine the joint representatives to challenge for the Hurunui Apanui Shield game. This match promises to be a fairly strenuous one and should be well worth watching. Soldiers now on furlough are invited to attend as guests of. the union. Cattle Impounded The Borough Inspector reports that for the month of June some thirteen head of cattle were impounded in the Whakatane pound— 6 heifers, 2 bulls, 3 cows, 2 horses and 1 foal. Two heifers, 2 bulls, 1 horse and goal were released. The 3 cows and 2 yearling heifers advertised were sold and. 1 horse now remained. Footpath and Kerbing Wanted A petition from Messrs McCallum, King, Cottrell and Lucas for the formation of a concrete path, kerb and channel to the front of their properties in Domain Road, came beiore the Whakatane Borough Council last Monday. The council decided that as the estimates had been completed already the work should be referred to the works committee to be held in view and if. pos-sible-to be given consideration should the opportunity occur.
