FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL TWO DRAWN CONTESTS On Thursday last the Whakatane District High School was invited to .send two football and four basketball teams to Tauranga. in order tc. participate in some- fricncllj' matches between the two institutions. The second fifteens ol' the respective' schools played 'in the morning, and the match, whi-ch was a clean hard-fought contest resulted in a draAv. The teams took the field at 11.30 a.m.. Tauranga with the sun in their favour. From the commencement ol' the game it was apparent that the Tauranga team had received more coaching than the Whakatane team. Both packs were fairly evenly matched but the play of the: Tauranga backs was superior. Through the eiVorts of Thompson,, Tauranga managed to secure the ball in every .serum, but owing to the h : gh form ol the Whakatane tackling, the passing rushes inaugurated by the Tauranga backs after they had received the ball from the scrum wove usually stopped or broken up before they had. proceeded v»ry far was awarded a penalty kick asa'nst Whakatane and this was kh-koi OV( . r the goal by Johnston making fhe score :] nil in T;;uranga's favour. Whakatane 8, Tauranga 8 The first fifteens took the: field in the afternoon at 2.10 p.m. and the game started Avith a rush by the Whakatane forwards AA'h.ich carried Hammond (Aving centre) oA'er the line toi score Avithin the first five minutes of play. The try Avas converted by Tiepa. Although the Tauranga team Avas 'in all ay ays a heavier one than Whakatane, this Avas counteracted by the additional speed shown by the Joeals. In the second half Hammond and Savage tried scissors passing seA'eral times, but only once did they achieve any considerable gain as after the first attempt they Avere marked immediately by the Tauranga men. A few minutes later Savage made a brilliant solo rush Avhich nearly carried him oAcr the line. However from the '.scrimi Avhich followed Good.aM (Whakatane breakaway) secured, and crossed the line sec-r-----ing Whakatane's "'second try of the 'match. Wilkinson succeeded in converting a penalty bringing ihc score to S all.
