CHASE BY COUNTY INSPECTOR MI SC ELLANEOU S CASES Two charges involving excessive speed, and also of failing to stop his car when signalled to do so by the County Traffic Inspector, were preferred againsit George Hislop, commercial traveller (Mr L. Buddlte) in the Whakatane Court last Tuesday. Mr T. E. Hamerton who appeared for the Council, said that on May 24th Inspector Curling was overtaken by the defendant's car whilst returning to Whakatane from Taneatua. On checking his speed it was found that lie was exceeding 50 m.p.h. The inspector had sounded his siren without succeeding in stopping the defendant, and had at one time overtaken and passed dhim. Stopping some distance ahead of him, he had left liis car and .signalled the defendant to stop, but even this had been ignored, Hislop continuing on into Whakatane; b\ r the rear road round the Rock and eventually pulling up outside, the Whakatane Hotel. Mr Buddie said that although his client would appear to be a 'speed hog' l.he circumstances were not so viscious as set out by the prosecution. He was not the type who Avas likely to wilfullj- disregard the bylaws . He admitted speeding, but was running late and Avas anxious to reach Whakatane before the garages closed. He had no reason to believe he was being followed and had heard no siren whatsoever. Admittedly he had seen the inspector
