PURCHASE BY COUNTY

SPECIAL RATING AREA FORMED

The Whakatane County Council decided as a result of the representations of the settlers in the Gtakiri district at its last meeting to take the initial steps to form a separate rating area for the purpose of purchasing the present Otakiri Hall on , the settlers behalf, for the sum of £450. Mr Leslie, secretary of the Otakiri Hall Committee, attended the meeting. Cr Hunter reported that with his co-councillor, Cr Smith, and the County; Clerk he hail, met the. Otakiri Hall Committee on ; the l'Oth June,, which committee colnprises Messrs Dunning (chairman), Leslie (secretary), Winters, Lee, CauUicld, Crystall,, Woodberry, Barton, Campbell and Jes&up. The full committee was present with the exception of Messrs Campbell and Jessup who sent apologies. The halil was inspected and in the opinion of the committee the purchase price of £450 is fair and reasonable. As: to the proposed hall district area, the hall committee adopted the suggestion of the council representatives. and deleted from such district the properties of Messrs D. O. Murray, Clark Orr and Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Co. Cr Hunter then introduced Mr Leslie who presented the. Otakiri Hall petition, aiid option with Mr Beattie. Mr Leslie stated that there were 56 properties in the area. Forty ratepayers had signed the petition and 12 ratepayers were absentees. Three ratepayers refused to sign the petition. Mr Jamieson was prepared to sign if only one section (section recently purchased from Mr Coward) was included in the area. He added that, the settlers were desirous of retaining the hall for the district and asked the council for the sum of. £550 which would also cover renovations. The formal resolution authorising the purchase and the. levying of' d in the £ on properties within- the special rating area was then carried. The council also instructed the acting engineer to make an inspection and report on the hall building Tor next meeting. I
