THE necessity to use the rail more than lrjkerto as a result of benzine and tyre restrictions, has brought focus to bear upon the exorbitant changes imposed by the Department upon certain of its feeder runs. The trip from the Strand Whakdtane costs the passenger travelling by rail, no less than 2/- each .way, a ridiculous state of af-/ fairs when it is considered that the vehicle used is re-i quired to make the journey irrespective of passengers or not, for the purposes of mails and goods collection. For a four mile trip the cost to each passenger is at the rate of * 6d per mile with no concession for the return trip. Based on the journey to Rotorua by the same means (12/6 for 50 miles) the cost is just a hundred per cent, greater—why ?
