MATAHINA PLANTATION
THE transfer of some fifty men, employees of the Whakatane Paper Mills from the Matakana pine plantations to the company's own area at Matahina, will mean a further increase in the wage-earning' population of this town. In practically all instances the men will seek to make their homes here and at an estimate, it would be fairly safe to assume that something like an additional £300 per week will be spent locally. Apart from the commercial aspect however we have to bear in mind the fact that the new? movement must lead to the further consolidation of Whakatane as a centre, and is another illustration of the debt the town owes to the Paper Mill venture.
