GO-OPERATION METHODS
FARMERS' DISCUSSIONS
The following notice of motion for the Dominion Conference was approved: "That we endeavour to bring about the adoption of co-op-erative ownership and control in industry' 'wherever such system is operable, as the only apparent alternative to bureaucratic nationa'isation; and that to this end contact with organised labour be made, and the possibility of its affiliation discussed." Mr J. W. Jones (Bay of Islands) moved and Mr H. C. McCreadv (Taneatua) seconded the following notice of motion for the Dominion Con I'erenee: — "That in view of the alarming 'drift towards bureaucratic nationalisation of all industry, and. the ensuing dislocation of all jiroductioir by strikes and other industrial disturbances due, it is alleged, to dissatisfaction generally with the operation of industry under the present capitalist system of ownership, we suggest that the only apparent alternative is to extend the principle of co-operative ownership and control to all industry where it is practicable, as is advocated and applied in the farming industry." Air R. C. Clark (Paerata) pointed out that the dairy companies were co-operative societies in many ways. The president agreed with Mr Clark, but said there were difficulties at present in making the cooperation complete. The remit Avas carried. A third notice of motion for the Dominion Conference was approved on tiie motion of Mr H. O. Mc'dsop, seconded by Mr A. E. Bryant (Te Awamutu). It read:— "That the Dominion Executive he supported in their efforts to organise a conference on the lines gested."
Note: This referred to an extract from 'Straight Furrow,' as follows, (written by Mr B. J. Adams): 'That it is true co-operation Avhich I pro, pose as a plan for the farmers of New Zealand; and I suggest that tiie Farmers' Union call a confcr--encc of farmers* to consider the probability of organising the farmers. of the whole of New Zealand into one. big co-operative society. The aims of the Society should be to bring about the federation of all existing true co-operatives, creation of credit unions, to own warehouses, factories, insurance offices. In general/to do all things possible to free farmers from the bondage in which they are now held." "That the question of holding a conference between all existing cooperative enterprises be relerred to the Dominion Conference."
