WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT EDGECUMBE
The Edgccumbc Women's Institute celebrated its thirteenth annlvcrsaiy on Tuesday, innc 15, by folding a birthday party. Visitors "were present from Otakiri Women's Institute. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship, after which Mrs Hodsun, president, welcomed the "visitors. A competition "Famous Persons" was won. by Mrs Thomson. Mrs Shaw dcjlighted all present with l:er singing of, "Bird Songs at Eventide." A pianoforte solo by Mrs Goodwin was heartily applauded. A play reading by Miss Elizabeth Gow raid Miss Justine Lc Lievre entitled "The Scoop"' provoked much hearty laughter. A musical story competition was won by Mrs Melville. A dainty afternoon tea was sex'vc\i by the committee and a beautiful birthday cake which had been mc.de bj* Mrs Hodson, was cut. In cutting the cake Mrs Armstrong of Otakiri Women's Institute, wished Edgccumbc W.I. many more happy years of work. The competitions for the day were as follows: Best Iceland Poppy, Mrs 1: Mrs Crang 2; Mrs Snclling 3. Best llower, Mrs Snclling 1; Mrs Crang 2; Mrs Wilson 3. Best three carrots, Mrs Flavel 1; Mrs Wilson 2; Mrs Speirs 3. Knitted cap for merchant seamen, Mrs List. 1; Mrs Wilson 2: Mrs Goldsmith 3. •A very pleasant afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
