What is a Blackbird ? Everyone knows the difference between the names "gander and goose,'' says a writer in "Forest and Bird,'' but it would seem there are few who are. aware that it is only the adult male' of "Tardus merula" which, is named. "Blackbird." The two sexes have different names. It is not until after the complete moulting of the nest feathers that the young males become "Blackbirds."' In England and Scotland, especially amongst country people, the females and young are called "Merles,"'
