Tlie suggested date for a conference (May 15) put forward by the Whakatane County Council for the purpose of discussing suitable sites for the. proposed district aerodrome, was found inconvenient for Borough Councillors at. last Monday's meeting. The Deputy Mayor (Cr S. SShapley) said that as most councillors were not convei'sant Avith the sites named by the County Council an opportunity should be giA'en to have, the sites inspected. Cr Creeke said that the council was definitely against the Te Teko site while Cr Canning mentioned Messrs Howell's property at Awakcri where the recent gymkhana Avas lie] ifc The matter was finally left to the Mayor to arrange a new and moro convenient date. Sanitary Charges Alleging that the council had usurped the poAvcrs of the. Tribunal by voluntarily increasing the fee to the local sanitary contractor 'without referring the matter to the Board, the Price Tribunal wrote declining to authorise the increase in the levy from £1 IDs to I'l 5s Gd aer householder. The Mayor stated that the matter had been referred to Mr W. Sullivan,. M.P.. and as a result of his good offices the Tribunal had been satisfied as to the need for the increase and had finally granted permission, "The only trouble about it is that the permission came too late to be included in the. rate demands, which haAe already been printed," lamented Mr Barry. Rubbish Truck Messrs Armstrong and Co. notified that unfortunately they ay ere not in a position to quote for any new vehicles suitable i'or use as a rubbish truck. "While, ayc all admit that rubbish collection is essential," said Cr Shapley, "it looks as though it is quite impossible to do anything about it until after the Avar." He suggested that such should be the decision of the council. Cr Armstrong: Why make a decision noAv. Something may still may crop up and avc. avoulcl have to rescind our motion. Cr Good: Why not get a secondhand: truck?
Tlie Mayor: We went into that and. considered that there would be a big risk of buying a lot of trouble. We might get something good, and then again we might not. We thought it safer to get a new one! The matter was left in abeyance. Water Supply A report was received from the Health Inspector detailing the results of the analysis, of Avatcr samples taken early in Ma 3- from the river, from the rising main, from the delivery main and from Domain Road. These results indicated (1) effective chlorination; (2) dirty reservoir; (;}) dirty mains. He stated that the reservoir and ma-in should be cleaned at the earliest opportunity and it might then be possible to reduce the amount of chlorine now used in the water. The Foreman-Engineer reported that his staff had almost completed. the scouring of the mains throughout the Borough with the use of the: fire hydrants, and the reservoir Avould be cleaned out at the first, opportunity. General The* Town Clerk reported a verbal arrangement with Mr G. Melville to lease, from year to year, tlxe then unused portion of the Mokorua cemetery site, at 5 per cent on t.lie. purchase consideration. He requested formal approval of the arrangement. Approved. Cr Shapley reported that a trailer pump would shortlj' be delivered to the Fire Brigade, and that the Fire Board would be required to house and maintain this equipment. "Suitable temporary housing could be found in the lean to 011 the southern side of the J "ire Station bill it Mould be. necessary for the doorway to be enlarged for the admission of the trailer pump.
