SITTING IN WHAKATANE

PAPER MILLS WORKERS

A further sitting of the Arm--ed< Forces Appeal Board took place in the Courthouse, Whakatane, last Tuesday and Thursday when' a substantial list was ■dealt with. The chairman, Mr E. Edwards, was supported by Messrs J. Poland and E. Wilton while Capt P. Williamson' represented the Army. A long list of appeals was enter--ed by the Whakatane Paper M/is (Mr J. Wright)" amongst which were numbered several volunteers l'or the • K.N.Z.A.F. Mr Wright said that, the Mill '•was working three shifts and were •endeavouring to meet a demand far <in excess of the output. The production however was steadily increasing, the amount produced this .year to the end of last month being 2000 tons in excess of the amount .produced last year. It could pos, sibly be stated now that the mill ■had reached its maximum, though with increased equipment the prei- • sent figures would be substantially improved. S. R. Windleborn a volunteer for -the Air Force opposed the appeal lodged by the company on his be•half declaring that he considered he ■would be serving his country better as a driver mechanic in the Air iForce. He had, he said, lound a man to replace, him alter his 1 last appeal but the company had trans, i'erred this man to another job. Adjourned sine die. D. M. Martin (rewinder) also an -Air Force volunteer, entered a similar objection stating that his job •was not a full time one. and that it "would not take long to school an--other employee up to relieve him. .He had been with the company for 18 months. Adjourned sine die. Other sine die adjournments in with appeals by the com, .pany were as under: A. S. Butcher (mobile hoist operator); D. W. J. 'Campbell (shift electrician); J. In the case of R. J. L. Smith <(cutterman) decision was reserved, -while four Maori bush workers P. T. Tangitu, S. M. Samuel, R. BicL--ois and T. Kuka appeals were wither awn. Mitchell's case was adjourned. till 30/9/43 reservist to remain in Home. Guard and in present -occupation. Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company withdrew its appeal on behalf of A. W. H. Wisnewski. . A. Conns ease Avas. adjourned till 30/11/43, reservist to join up -with the Home Guard Medical Section. The case of P. C. Tipper Avas .adjourned pending a medical certificate. and also a report from the Primary Production Council. Holds"worth Bros, appeal on behalf of L. Taylor Avas dismissed, reservist .not to be called before 20/7/43.
