Having been granted permissior lo race on the King's Birthday holi. day on June 7, the Auckland Racing Club will hold its winter meeting at Ellerslie on June 5 and 7 instead of on June 5 and 12 as originally arranged. The. order of the races will not be affected by the change of dates, the Great Northerr Hurdles and the Great Northerr Steeplechase, both to be run on the I first day. TRACING TO SOULT Purple Vermecr, a "surprise win. Ncr at the Poverty Bay fixture, ha: pedigree lines to recommend him although lie has been some time ii getting on to the winning list. WILL DO BETTER The Mr Standfast—Bravado gelding Orakau, was well in the boon at Te Arolia and Te Rapa, where he registered a second an el an un placed effort respectively. He woulc probably have tlone better on firir going, and backers will doubtless follow him up consistently. A* PROTEST DISMISSED At the Waikato meeting tlu trainer of Air Port entered a pro test against the winner, Gay Lally on the grounds that the rider o the latter hit the runner-up acros: the face with his whip. The pro test was dismissed. A PROVED STAYER The Soutlilanel jumper, Slayer, rid den by his trainer, A. Jenkins, o Masterton, competed in the Te Rap; Steeplechase. He jumped, safely ane handled the soft going satisfactori ly, t and the effort will further hi; preparation for the Great Nor then Steeplechase, this week. GOLD SPOT AT ELLERSLIE Owing to Gold Spot striking ar obstacle in the Te Rapa Steeple chase and losing his rieler, no line could be gained as to his: chance: in the Great Northerns, but if the Ellerslie course is in reasonablj good order The Ace—Gold Plane gelding may be relied upon to give fine exhibitions of fast jumping. COMING INTO FAVOUR The prominent running of Comrii in the Te Rapa Steeplechase ha brought the chestnut into favou for the Greati Northern Steeples At. the Pakuranga Hunt Club meet ing last August, Comrie had the dis tinction of winning a double ove the big jumps. In the opinion o some good judges it is open i< doubt whether Comrie will be cjuit ready for the three and tliree-ouar ter miles journey at Ellerslie. BRIDGE ACRE The two year old lilly by Foxbridge—Ann Acre, owned by Mr J. Cheesman, of Wellington, has been named Bridge Acre. She is a member of the Trentham team presided over by Albert Goodman. THE WINNING LIST The Nicholson-Davis team at Papakura has been responsible for £6000 in prize money this season, and the stable presided over by T. F. Verner will more than likely l again be at the top of the winning list. NOT QUITE READY Evan's Head, who has not competed for some months, was well in the boom for the Hamilton Hurdles, and ridden by Corbett finished weill back. From a racing point of view he did not appear to be quite ready for a two miles contest, but will be considerably improved by the race.
