CHILDREN IN FANCY DRESS
GAY THORNTON EVENING
The annual Faucy Dress Ball of the Thornton School took place in the local hall on Wednesday evenring r May 7. The attendance Avas smaller than at last year's function and the costumes fewer also,
owing to the shortage of the nece»-
sary materials.
After the National Anthem, the pupils performed the Grand March. Diiriflg this, the marching was judged by Flight Staff Sergeant Andrews and the costumes by Mrs Bell. FoW lowing on the Grand March the senior pupils took part in the following dances: Maxina, Veleta, Palms Guide, Log Cabin, Military 2-Step and Chain Waltz. Interspersed among these were adult dances, a junior pupil folk dance (Sir Roger de Coverly) and four competitive floor games for the children.
Prizes were awarded as follows: Senior Marching, girls: Barbara Palmes; boys, Allan Moore. iM •' junior Marching, g|rj,s:" boys, Morris Davis. Best Senior Costume, girls: Beryl Brashier as Queen of Hearts, coupled with Margaret Murray las Milkmaid (Mrs Bell's special prize). Best Senior Costume, boys: Don Gurrie as Walter Raleigh. Best Junior Costume, girls: Colin Branch as a Rajah. Best Junior Costume, boys: Lois Moore as a Ranee. Most Original Girl: Ruth McDonald as Haberdashey. Most Original Boy: Barry McGillan as Departed Spirits. Winner of Unwrapping the Parcel game: Julie Davis (Senr) Winner of Passing the Hat: Johnny Davis (Senr). Winner of Musical Flops: Andrew Patrick (Junior). Winner of Passing the Stick: ris Davis (Junior). Three Spot Waltz competitions for the adults were won by Mr L» Candy and Miss M. Jury, Master T„ Fisher and Mrs Fisher and Miss HNewton and partner.
During an interval in the dances, opportunity was taken to welcome back to the district Flight-Sergeant K. Andrews who lias lately returned from active service in the Middle East and who formerly was a relieving teacher in the* Thomtkwi School.
A v first class supper was served and music was provided by the popular Gaiety Boys dance band.
