SERVICE FOR THE FORCES
Over 50.000 orders have, now been received by the National Patriotic Fund Board postal tobacca service, which was introduced to enable relatives and friends to send to members of the. New Zealand Forces overseas their favourite brands of cigarettes and tobacco* at reduced prices, This total has been built, up in a little over 15 months, the 50,OOOnth order being received at the beginning of this month.
As the cigarettes, and tobacco are available free of excise duty and sales tax and the prices charged also include postage and the cost of a specially made tin container, the 50,000 orders represent a saving in the aggregate to the senders of approximately £25,000. The orders have, come from all over the Dominion and have been received mainly through tobacconist and other stores acting as agents of the board.
Many letters have been received from the men overseas, acknowledging the safe arrival of the parcels and expressing appreciation of the service, which is particularly welcomed by New Zealanders serving in the R.A.F., in the Royal Navy, and in the Forestry Units in England., where ordinarily retail sales of cigarettes and tobacco are restricted.
Of the orders received to date, the greatest number lias been for cigarette tobacco. With lib of that type of tobacco, eight packets of tissues arc sent. The cost, including the provision of a tin and postage, is lis for most brands. If sent in the ordinary way,, the cost to the sender would be. 275.
